Ubisoft’s In-Game Currency System Breached in $13M Hacker Exploit
Ubisoft, the French video gaming giant, faced a significant security breach over the weekend, forcing the shutdown of its Rainbow Six Siege live service. Hackers exploited the system to distribute $13.33 million worth of R6 Credits, the game’s premium currency, flooding player accounts with up to 2 billion credits.
The breach also compromised moderation systems, leading to random bans and unbans, as well as manipulated ban tickers displaying custom messages. Ubisoft has initiated a rollback of all fraudulent transactions and is conducting extensive quality control tests to restore service integrity. The company assured players that accounts spending unauthorized credits WOULD not face penalties.
At Ubisoft’s standard pricing of $99.99 for 15,000 R6 Credits, the distributed amount equates to roughly $13.33 million. The incident underscores the vulnerabilities in digital currency systems, even outside traditional financial markets.
